Announcer 00:10 Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming your host Joe Ross, Senior Director, Workflow and Informatics Solutions.
Joe Ross 00:19 Thank you, all. Well, I literally have to physically thank you and virtually thank you for those that are with us today.
We are extremely excited to have you here because we've got a number of topics that we want to talk to you about that are likely very top of mind. But let's start with the first topic, the topic of health. It's something that we all want, but not just health, good health. When you go to your doctor's office you put your trust in those clinicians, they will keep you in or bring you back to good health. But I'll let you know for those of you that are with us here today, those clinicians rely on you tremendously to play a key role in elevating patient care.
Joe Ross 01:04 Now there's a known statistic, 70% of medical decisions start with a clinical lab diagnostic test. We deal with that daily. Our patients, on the other hand, they don't understand the complexity of the laboratory operation that's required to produce their lab results. Now, the CDC also says that there's 40,000 to 80,000 deaths that occur annually due to preventable diagnostic errors. That's more than the number of people that attend a baseball game at the Atlanta Braves Truist Park Stadium. That's more than the annual attendees of the University of Georgia.
Joe Ross 01:48 Each tube, each test represents someone's health on the line. That person could be a child, could be a sibling, an uncle or an aunt, a parent, a grandparent, or even a great-grandparent. Now know we know that labs face a tremendous amount of pressure and they deal with things like errors, errors that occur within the laboratory, as well as dealing with errors that come in from outside of the laboratory. 75% of the mistakes made within the laboratory happen in the pre-analytical phase of your process, as well as turnaround time pressures on a daily basis.
Joe Ross 02:33 So we'll go back to some questions and we'll ask how many of you here have a mandate for a 45-minute to a 60-minute turnaround time to return results? We hear that's quite often, exactly. How difficult is that to achieve on a day-to-day basis?
Now let me ask a different question. What about those outlier specimens, those specimens that get caught in some sort of bottleneck where we're requiring extra manual manipulation? Are your clinicians or your customers concerned about your average turnaround time or are they concerned about that one that got away?
Joe Ross 03:12 We know that they're focused on those specimens that simply take too long. Now imagine the impact on patient care if laboratories could mitigate those errors early on and minimize those outliers. Now not only reduce the risk of having those errors, but also enable your laboratory professional to focus on quality care delivery. Labs, professionals are stretched to capacity dealing with manual and repetitive work so much so that they're simply burnt out.
Joe Ross 03:48 And don't take my word for it. Go to Reddit and search “reason young techs are leaving” today. Now we're going to go by a show of hands again. Within the past year, how many of you have had a lab professional your organization? I think that's probably all of us.
Now within the last quarter of this year, how many of you have lost a lab professional? Almost everyone again. Now I think this will hit home and I think I know the answer because my wife is a laboratory director, but within the past month, the month of September, how many of you have lost one of your lab professionals?
Joe Ross 04:26 Exactly. Look around. You are not alone. What if we could improve the work experience for our laboratory professionals? What if we could reduce the manual work associated with processing all of these specimens such as receiving them into the lab, visually inspecting each tube, ensuring that the label's put on perfectly, ensuring that there's a volume to run all the tests required? Putting the tube in the centrifuge, pulling them out of the centrifuge, and so on and so forth. Multiplied times a thousand of tubes that they touch on an annual basis.
Joe Ross 05:06 What if a solution could eliminate up to 80% of those pre-analytical steps and post-analytical steps associated with your process?
How many of you here would welcome that type of a solution? Right.
And what if you could achieve that level of efficiency even though budget and space are probably a constraint?
Now you can. What once was only available for large volume laboratories has now become a necessity for the mid volume labs. Now made possible with the DxA 5000 Fit automated ecosystem. This system is an innovative automation solution that fundamentally improves the laboratory workflow by allowing access to intelligent automation for labs of all sizes.
Joe Ross 06:05 The design behind this system is to employ a no look, one touch philosophy for all specimens. And you heard what I said, not just chemistry and immunoassay tests, all specimens. The sophistication behind this system is to take the guesswork out of the hands of the laboratory professional and place it into the intelligence of the DxA 5000 Fit. That way, upfront sorting a manual manipulation of those specimens is fundamentally minimized.
Joe Ross 06:37 Further unique design of the DxA 5000 Fit is to manage those samples with a high level of priority throughout the entire journey of those specimens. Simply put, when a STAT is loaded onto this system, it's handled as a STAT on multiple junctures of the system. Those STATs are processed first, they're loaded into the centrifuge first. The system knows to pull those out of the centrifuge first. Those STATs are then decapped first and then they're replaced in a priority route ahead of all of the routine specimens to optimize the turnaround time result for that patient.
Joe Ross 07:17 The DxA 5000 Fit drives speed and accuracy while maintaining a small footprint eliminating up to 80% of those pre-analytical imposed analytical errors.
Now remember, we are here to bring us all back to good health and to elevate patient care capable of sample quality detection of nine sample parameters within the first three seconds of sample pre-analytical prep. Meaning that the first three seconds that this system picks up that tube we deliver that sample quality result, which prior to that was done manually nine times per tube one by one times the hundreds of tests that come through the lab every single day, which consists of the 70% of time laboratory professionals spend on doing manual repetitive work.
Joe Ross 08:17 Let's restate that. 70% of which could be partially automated by the DxA 5000 Fit. This system is also designed to give you multidisciplinary track configurations consisting of clinical chemistry, immunoassay, and we are extraordinarily proud today to introduce that hematology comes with this system design for mid volume laboratories. This has never been realized before.
Before today, labs cannot combine coagulation into all the core disciplines into one single point of entry. Imagine the potential that this could have to labs that didn't have access to this technology before and the positive potential for patient results to be rapidly delivered to clinicians. It's now accessible.
Joe Ross 09:10 Now with the DxA 5000 Fit which brings true connectivity of all four core disciplines to laboratories who have not had access to this technology before. In this volume segment, laboratories are starting to realize a potential of this system due to the pressures and demands that are placed on them. Susan Enciso from Excela Health puts it plainly on how she feels this system will impact her laboratory.
The DxA 5000 Fit is an integral part of the DxA family offering an automated ecosystem to laboratories that were once constrained by budget, space, and frankly, volume.
Joe Ross 09:55 Now let's remember of that statistic from the beginning. 75% of errors in the laboratory happened in the pre-analytical phase. The DxA 5000 Fit is intended to mitigate many of those errors within the first three seconds of being introduced to this system, giving back time and peace of mind to the lab professional to focus on critical patient results.
Joe Ross 10:21 Now I want to thank you all again for being with us today. Now for those that are with us with the Beckman Coulter crew that have helped bring DxA 5000 Fit to Atlanta, I'd like you all to raise your hand and we'll give you a round of applause. Thank you. For those of you would like to interact with the system and learn how this can impact your laboratory as well, we encourage you to come work with a couple of us, run this system and see how impactful it can be within your laboratory. If you're attending online, please drop us a note or a comment and we will get back to you accordingly.
Thank you all and have a safe travel home.
